My Mission Statement (or…why you should stop worrying and love my blog!)
This blog entry will let you know if you should be reading this blog.
I am taking YOU into account here my dear reader, as I too, as readers before you, have read halfway through a blog and thought, “My goodness! I am mistaken! This blog isn’t for me at all!” and wished that I had my few minutes of life credited back to me. So, in order to not waste any moments of your precious life (because really, every life is precious…some more than others though!) I will give a list of those who will enjoy this blog. Starting…NOW…
I myself, am a geek.
What makes me a geek you may ask?
I enjoy making video clips in my head to the music that I’m listening too, I absolutely love staying at home in my PJS and watching movies, curled up on the couch with my husband (aka ‘Hottie’) eating ice-cream covered in hot fudge, my Mum (and my husband aka ‘hottie’) is my bestfriend in the whole wide world, and I absolutely ADORE spending time with her, I am a massive hygiene freak and carry around a bottle of hand sanitizer everywhere I go. If I eat something, and my Purell it’s not there with me, I will NOT touch it with my hands, I don’t drink, smoke, take drugs, I LIVE for food, I love the smell of books – used or new I don’t discriminate, I love getting things in the mail, winter and 50s dresses, I would rather have a home cooked meal than go out and eat, everytime I go to the same place for dinner (which is ALL the time) I order the EXACT same thing…..
That and many others things make me a geek, but what do I think a geek is?
It’s not this -
but rather this -
Yes my friends, Elijah Wood IS a geek (and a hot one too…) He is what some have called ‘Geek chic’ – a geeky person, who is, ultimately, into cool things, things that might not have been cool thirty years ago, but have become so with time and the fact that they are now ‘vintage.’
THAT is the sort of geek that I believe will like this blog – Star Wars loving, comic book reading, rock n’ roll obsessed, crazy, free spirited GEEKS. People that don’t care what people think about the things that they care about. That’s what I call a geek.
- Comic book lovers.
I probably should have made this no.1, but I believe that all geeks really do love graphic novels deep down.
I was introduced to comics at a young age…I don’t know who by, but I always seemed to have a comic in my hand. I read Archie, Little Archie, Veronica, Betty, Casper, Richie Rich – all those cheesy family friendly characters – I LOVED them.
I remember going to LA and just going wild searching through the stacks of comics at Jelly’s. There’s a photo of me on our hotel bed with all my comics that I bought for the day spread out in front of me, and a goofy smile on my face.
Why do I love them so much? It’s the combination of art and fiction – it’s like reading a movie, and I believe that so much passion and blood and guts go into graphic novels. Each panel has so much love poured into it, and I really appreciate the time and effort put into each sketch.
- People who love books.
Yes, there is a big big difference between graphic novels and novels, mainly that graphic novels are filled with pictures and novels are filled with text. But in graphic novels, the pictures are enough to fill up a whole page of text. You can literally just look at the panels for ages, without reading a word, and I swear you will get a different story altogether. They make you think more, I believe.
- People who love art.
This is pretty much self-explanatary! But each panel, I believe, can be enlarged and hung on a wall. Especially the stuff by Chris Ware – man that guy can draw! Each GF has it’s own personality, and it’s own way of doing things, they are like people with their own insecurities and way of talking and walking around. Unlike novels, everything about a graphic novel is important. The cover art, if it’s a hardcover, the hidden treasures underneath the dust jacket, the paper used, if it’s colour or black and white. With novels, I believe, the real pudding is in the words. With graphic novels it’s the complete package, just like how a movie poster is just as important as the movie.
Some of my favourite graphic novel artists are – - -
- JULIA WERTZ
- Chris Ware
- Jaime Hernandez
- Daniel Clowes
…and more TBA!!!!
- Those who want to get into graphic novels and/or don’t know where to start!
I’m just a new comer to graphic novels really. I started reading them just a few months ago, but am already hooked on buying a crapload of them from Amazon! It was love at first sight when I first saw Chris Ware’s (who I think is a genius!) work.
I want this blog to be part reviews, part personal journey of finding new graphic novels, falling in love with different artists, hating others (though I haven’t hated any yet!!), and giving my opinion on what you should and shouldn’t bother with!
If any of these even SEEM like you…
