Luba Hardcover – first impressions

I’m halfway through the Luba hardcover and oh my – I’m in love! Seriously, it’s Hernandez’s best since Heartbreak Soup!
Why?
I guess it’s because it’s so wonderfully character driven, all the stories lock into each other, the characters are all so rich and diverse, and *shock horror* Luba is tolerable!
All of Luba’s kids – from big to small, are all so adorable, and so full of quirkiness. I love how Hernandez has made all of them, except for Socorro, have homosexual tendencies.
I love Fritz and her cute little lisp (being a girl that has a slight lisp, I can relate), I love Venus and how she acts way beyond her years, I love how handsome Sergio is, I love how vivacious Doralis acts and how a whole TV show is dedicated to her crazy ways – really there isn’t that much NOT to love!

Sergio - not just a hunk, but a soccer star as well!

The only characters that give me a bit of an uneasy feeling are Gato - he’s big and ugly and creepy – and Khamo – I just don’t trust the guy!
Stay tuned for a full review after I finish the wonderful trip that has been the “Luba” hardcover!

I’m very fond of the Luba omnibus because it adds more depth to the Palomar characters and the storytelling is so rich. You don’t trust Khamo? I think its the character Fortunato that is not to be trusted. He’s a womanizer and he practically sleep with any woman. I knew you were going to like the omnibus as well as Venus. I became instantly smitten with Venus because of her love of comics. I started collecting comics (and cards which I still own to this day) at age 11 and it was full speed ahead.

This omnibus definitely adds more character depth in Luba. I think this omnibus is where you see another side to her complex character.

I actually hadn’t happened across Fortunato untill last night – yeah, he has shifty eyes and I don’t think he’s that hot at all!
Yeah, that’s why I like Venus too – I was obsessed with Archie, Casper, Richie Rich as a kid – I’m hoping to actually do a post on Archie soon – I wouldn’t mind catching up on my Archie stories! (Though I did stumble across a few new Archie’s in my local newsagent that had posters of Glee in it?! Weird) – When my husband and I have kids in the future, I’m going to take them to heaps of comic book stores and get them into comics – there’s something comforting about comics – I don’t know if it’s just because it reminds me of my childhood, or because of the artwork – but it evokes feelings in me that no novel can (though I’m still a bit novel reader as well)
